Knowing about your individual risk of thrombosis

Risk of Thrombosis during Pregnancy

Thromboserisiko in der Schwangerschaft - Gefahr für Mutter und Kind.

A thrombosis occurs when a blood clot obstructs or blocks a blood vessel –in pregnancies usually in the leg or pelvis area. It is especially dangerous when parts of the coagulum detaches and gets through the heart into the lungs.

Risk for Mother and Child

If the clot blocks the pulmonary artery, it comes to a pulmonary embolism. The affected area is no longer connected to the blood circulation, thus exchange of oxygen can not take place. The blood pressure drops. The patients suffer from breath shortness and dizziness. A circulatory collapse is the result. If a larger lung vessel is affected, the embolism usually ends fatally.

Thrombosis Risk Analysis with thrombotrac S

Based on the personal data of the pregnant woman combined and put into relation with the blood test results, the report shows, how the individual risk of thrombosis during pregnancy behaves. The attending physician receives well-founded values for determining whether and from which week of pregnancy a medicinal thrombosis prevention (e.g. heparin) of the mother and the child is more useful than it can possibly harm the fetus.

Thrombosis Risk Factors during pregnancy

Pregnant women have a fivefold higher risk of thrombosis compared to woman of similar age expecting no child. The risk is increased by several factors:

  • Genetic (congenital) Factors
allow the prediction of the likelihood of incidence (i.g.: Factor V Leiden mutation)
  • Acute Phase during Pregnancy
DThe blood composition changes, the body adjusts to the birth and thus related bleeding (e.g.: Factor VIII, D-Dimer, von Willebrand antigen)
  • Anatomical Changes during Pregnancy
Due to the enlarged uterus it comes to increased pressure in the thigh- and pelvic veins area. This increases the risk of thrombosis in this area of the body strongly.
Further, particularly important factors include whether the patient has already suffered a thrombosis before pregnancy. This enhances the risk of further thrombosis during pregnancy enormously.
Considering the constant wearing of compression stockings just like the fact that sports in the second half of pregnancy can no longer be used as a thrombosis risk-reduction factors.
